THE APC
What it involves & what candidates need to do
What it involves & what candidates need to do
The RICS Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) is a process which seeks to ensure that prospective Chartered Surveyors are competent and meet the high standards of professionalism required to practice.
It involves candidates undertaking experience and then being able to demonstrate their technical and professional abilities, as well as relevant interpersonal, business and management skills.
The APC can seem like a daunting prospect, but we firmly believe that it shouldn’t be if candidates are helped to understand the process and are appropriately assisted to focus on achieving each aspect of it.
APC Success provides coaching, mentoring and training courses which help APC candidates to navigate their way smartly through the APC process, to help them grow as professionals and make sure that they know how best to demonstrate the high standards expected of them.
We also provide support to HR Learning Teams to help their organisations design and run effective APC programmes. Furthermore, our support to APC Counsellors enables them to understand what their formal APC role requires and insight into how they can provide best-in-class APC support for their candidates.
With fewer than 5 years of relevant work experience, you will need to enrol upon the APC and undertake 24 months of “structured training”.
APC Success can help you to navigate the APC process smartly, understand how to gain and demonstrate suitable experience, use the RICS Assessment Resources Centre (ARC), draft a high quality submission and prepare for the final assessment interview.

Despite the apparently daunting and hard to understand nature of the APC, it is important that candidates take control of the process. Helping candidates to build the appropriate knowledge and self-confidence to do so is a particular strength of ours – we understand when and why candidates can become anxious and take time to help on an individual basis when this is the case.
In our experience, there are certain aspects of the APC which are absolutely fundamental that candidates focus a large part of their attention upon:
Of course, the devil is in the detail and assessors look especially closely for relevant and appropriate evidence in candidates’ submissions. This is where the support of APC Success can be particularly instrumental.
We also help our candidates to finesse other aspects of the APC in order to make the process as smooth and straightforward as possible, right the way through to the final assessment interview.

At APC Success, we are all APC Assessors (i.e. appointed by RICS to assess APC candidates’ submissions and undertake APC interviews) and have assessed hundreds of candidates. We are, therefore, well-versed in understanding the common mistakes that candidates can make during their APC. This enables us to ensure that our candidates do not suffer from:
